At Mesh, we were tasked with developing a strategic roadmap for the revitalization of the site. Our first step was conducting an in-depth territorial diagnostic using innovative methodologies, including extensive stakeholder interviews and surveys to gather comprehensive insights. We engaged with key local actors and elected officials anonymously, utilizing design thinking workshops and anonymous idea-sharing techniques, such as post-it note exercises, to depersonalize proposals and focus on the merits of the ideas rather than their political origins. This approach was crucial in achieving political alignment on the project’s objectives.

We organized several co-creation workshops that mobilized a broad spectrum of citizens, gathering input from over 700 individuals. These workshops were designed to foster dialogue, generate innovative ideas, and build consensus around the project’s direction. The project gained significant momentum, attracting participation from social enterprises across the region and even the general secretary of SNCF, who joined one of the design thinking workshops. Using design thinking, we identified the main challenges and opportunities, ensuring that the proposed solutions addressed the intrinsic needs of the local population.

The activities identified were designed using circular economy principles to maximize the resilience of the local economy. Additionally, we explored opportunities to transform the territory into a lab for renewable energy implementation. The workshops resulted in six major project themes: responsible agriculture, education and training, hospitality and conviviality, sports and well-being, tourism and accommodation, and the promotion of local craftsmanship.

To ensure the project’s sustainability and broad acceptance, we implemented a comprehensive communication strategy. This included targeted outreach to mobilize citizens and potential project leaders, partnerships with local media and community organizations, and regular updates to maintain transparency. The project was intricately connected to transport infrastructures, linking employment and food security issues, and transforming the site into a cultural, culinary, and natural heritage hub. After a year of intense mobilization, we delivered a master plan that integrated social enterprises and responded to the community’s expressed needs, setting a new standard for sustainable territorial development.
